Kaiser Permanente
As one of the nation’s most productive research institutions, Kaiser Permanente is transforming the future of health and health care. Our researchers use their deep expertise, strategic partnerships, and the rich resource provided by our electronic health record system to conduct groundbreaking research that translates into benefits for individual patients, health care delivery systems, and society at large.
Cancer research
Kaiser Permanente is one the largest enrolling sites in the nation for National Cancer Institute clinical trials. As part of the NCI Community Oncology Research Program, a national network that brings cancer clinical trials and care delivery studies to people in their own communities, Kaiser Permanente has decades of experience conducting cancer clinical trials as well as conducting cancer care delivery and health disparities research.
Heart disease research
Cardiovascular disease is an active area of study for Kaiser Permanente. Scientists use our comprehensive longitudinal data to advance knowledge in the areas of understanding risk, improving patient outcomes, and translating research findings into policy and practice. We have published more than 1,400 articles related to cardiovascular disease since 2007. Together, these articles have been cited 98,000 times.
Vaccines research
New vaccines recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration to protect against COVID-19 were developed at record speed. Kaiser Permanente scientists were engaged in several clinical trials to ensure their effectiveness and safety. Our scientists have been conducting vaccine safety and effectiveness research for 30 years. Five Kaiser Permanente regions are part of the Vaccine Safety Datalink — a collaboration between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and 9 healthcare systems.
Dozens of current VSD projects focus on monitoring the safety and effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine, including tracking any rare and adverse health effects.
Kaiser Permanente Research Bank
The Kaiser Permanente Research Bank is a collection of health information and blood samples shared by member volunteers. This information helps doctors and researchers learn about disease, make discoveries, find treatments, and help people live healthier lives.
